Formed from the ashes of Dark Recollections comes five atmospheric, non linear, and detailed Heretic maps with 2-5 hours of tough gameplay.

E1M2 - 'Woeful Specters' by Egregor
E1M3 - 'Key of Oppression (within the City of Screaming Statues)' by DeathevokatioN
E1M4 - 'Sorcerers Enclave' by Vordakk
E1M5 - 'Master's Hammer' by DeathevokatioN

Although there's more maps in 'progress', nothing is certain because it's a sideproject, so you can consider it a full version in the meantime. Razz

Well... an eight map 'finished' version will at soonest be released sometime 2016 because I'm stretched really thin with regards to projects, so maybe you can play it both now and then? Razz

Cool, heh it's been a long time that I hadn't played some Heretic. Smile
I've replayed the first map ( I remember giving it a try ), it's great. A testament to the good old vanilla episodes, with various secrets, and many lowering walls revealing monster closets and whatnot.

Some minor visual things to fix :

Ammo is really scarce at the ending, and you're somewhat forced to use your Tomes of Power ( something I rarely do in the original game ).

On to the second map, I don't think I've played that one !

Don't worry, i like playing a v1.0 and be only on it for a moment, i will play it, for sure!
Better to have some guys like wilou who can test some maps of your wad ^^
(i finished all the megawad of Heretic who are 1 episod or more....i need more of it geek )
Heretic is so well made, basically, balance and all. Smile

Also, what is the "theme" of the project? Like the original heretic so, or ?

Nothing to report on the second map, it's a solid play based on a trope that's become quite popular by now ( gather the three keys in any order you wish, then proceed to the exit ).
One thing I didn't like was the ending scenery : you drop from a deep underground area into a sky-lit arena with a low sky level, well it kinda breaks the immersion factor I think.

E1M3... Man, this is massive. Cool
The beginning is tough on "wand start" because the Crossbow is heavily guarded and ammo is at a premium. But once you manage to survive, the rest isn't that threatening - until you get to the Yellow door, that is.
Very nice scenery in there, I particularly liked the throne area near the Dragon Claw, and the outside cityscape near the Green door.

The trap after the Yellow door is great. Finally these Iron Liches get to deal some serious pain Smile

After that, the Hellstaff makes its appearance. To be honest I never really thought it was a powerful weapon, compared to Doom's Plasma Rifle.

Secrets are well-hidden ( I found none of thm ). I suppose at least one of them let you explore the outside areas a bit ( Heretic usually does that ).
Super-cool map ^^

Edit : E1M4 has very nice lighting effects... Smile
One thing I didn't like in there was the fact that one of the black / grey metallic textures with rivets was used for too many different things : lifts ( near the Dragon Claw ), a crusher, and then walls.
Usually it's best to use textures in an appropriate and established way ( i.e. door textures shouldn't be used as lifts, switch textures should never be used as regular walls, etc. ).
Sadly the Heretic stock texture pack doesn't allow for a lot of possibilities...

The outside area with the Maulotor is pretty cool. Smile
I'll save a game here and resume my playthrough on tomorrow. I'm at the Blue key fight, things are getting pretty intense but I still have a Tome ready.

Just finished E1M4, took me an hour. Only 3 secrets found out of 7 ( I like when there are many secrets ).
Superb map, maybe the one with the best lighting effects so far.
Maybe a bit linear though, but it's not so bad here since the variety of the locales keep things interesting Smile

On to E1M5 !
This one is definitely more open, and feels quite city-like. Its atmosphere is also moody.
There are some nice traps, like the sudden Iron Lich group with the wall raising behind you in the Gold key room. Pray that these guys don't throw hurricanes at you ! :p

I liked the fact that the Crossbow is given a bit late in the map, so that other weapons can shine - usually the Crossbow is my main weapon in Heretic, as the Shotgun is in Doom.

Just found the Phoenix Rod secret... and I think I finally remember this map now. Smile
An epic fight to end the wad... I still have 3 unused Tomes, and only one of them is needed to make short work of the damned legions.

So yeah, that's pretty cool. There aren't too many Heretic wads sadly, but this one's among the best for sure. It's rather short, but focused on what it aims to deliver - which is a fun, classic Heretic experience.

Damn, I wrote a lengthy reply and closed the window by accident haha... but seriously, thank you so much for the charming review, Wilou, you're awesome! I addressed all the bugs you mentioned and uploaded a new version.

There's a backstory about those blue sectors in E1M1, in 2010 they were originally meant to be buttons that you pressed, they'd lower and with them a wall behind you would also lower and it'd give you access to the kill the undead warriors in their cages, but I changed my mind out of laziness, because at that point the exit looks so attractive and I don't want to alter the nature of that exit room. Razz

I played the map coop with my brother and a friend, and we had a blast, and I got nagged to extend it so I'm going to resume design and try revamp a small introduction map I gave up on in 2010 (wish me luck, this map really is an ugly piece of shit haha), also I'm going to see if I can get Vordakk to help me, and get another guest map or two, to bump the map number to 8 or 9.

Thanks again for the review, mate... btw, Wilou... do you think current E1M5 would serve as a good finale or should I design a D'sparil arena? I'm guessing the latter, but I appreciate player opinions. Razz

It's a real pity we don't see many good Heretic wads. We Doom mappers should really do something about it... I wish I could, but sadly I'm in too many projects already Surprised

As for E1M5 being the ending map, well the Maulotaur + friends fight is damn cool but maybe lacks the panache needed for a true memorable finale. You could expand on the existing E1M5 instead of creating another map... ?

D'Sparil would be fun to fight but I guess he'd require some assistance during the second stage of the battle so that things get really nasty, even for us cocky veterans Cool

I have played the first map (difficult 3/5) very difficult but wonderful, the level design make it really fun and interesting! There is a lot of things to do !
