Hello, I am Stormwalker a.k.a Vordakk.  I have recently completed a new map for Doom 2 called "Extinguished", which occupies the MAP01 slot and requires a limit-removing engine.  This map was originally intended as a remake of MAP21 of Doom 2(Nirvana).  The map is fairly difficult, but nowhere near as tough as Sunlust or other very hard wads.  EDIT: The map is complete and has been uploaded to the /idgames archive.  Thank you for taking the time to view this thread!

Hey Smile
Welcome to our boards, Stormwalker. I really enjoyed "Flashback to Hell" a couple years ago, so it's nice to see you carrying on with cool remakes of stock Doom II maps.

"Nirvana" has never been a favorite of mine, I think it's a really poor introduction to Doom II's hellish episode ( Doom's E3M1 was vastly superior in that regard IMHO ), therefore I was a bit curious to see what you could do with that kind of source material.

And oh boy, what a ride this map was. Cool
It's quite tough indeed, I got killed many times ( I played on UV with ZDoom 2.7.1, with saves ), mostly in the post-BK door part with these narrow corridors. This map shows how dangerous Doom monsters can be in tight spaces - the Baron / Demons / HK pincer trap near one of the three switches is absolutely lethal Smile
The huge Mancubus fight for the YK is such a simple yet effective setup, liked it a lot.
Then you added original areas, like that part after the Yellow door with reviving enemies. That one could be a bit annoying but once you figure out where to go I guess it's ok. What I disliked, though, was that two of the trapped lifts allowing us to reach and kill the AVs were a bit too hard to survive, even with the Plasma Gun equipped, as the lifts led us right in front of the AVs without any cover whatsoever. The trick was to try and trigger the lift from above and take a few pot shots, but it gets tedious real fast.

I then spent ages looking for the Red key. As it turned out, it was hidden under rotten tomatoes :

Now you see me, now you don't...:

I suggest having monster blocking lines around such major items.

On to the "Wormhole" area instead of killing the two Cybers guarding what appears to be the exit... Pretty cool stuff with a nice slaughter moment, and I liked that it's much more than a retextured copy of the map.

Overall, yeah it's a great level Wink
Not so much of a "Nirvana" remake but rather a standalone adventure.
Loved the attention put into little architectural details and lighting effects. Players are kept on their toes thanks to a constant challenge, and the high number of secrets is always a plus in my book ( found 8 of them out of 9 ).

Thanks for sharing the map with us !

Hello Wilou84 and franckFRAG! Thanks to both of you for your kind words! And many thanks to you Wilou84 for playing the map already even though I just posted it, that was unexpected and a very cool surprise! Your critiques are very helpful and I will be updating the map to reflect the good ideas you had for improving it.

I will post a link to the updated wad as soon as I make the changes, in case anyone else wants to play the level. Thanks again.

I played in UV without saves, but I got killed too many times x) I'm rusty, I'm thinking to play another day hehe, but I really appreciate your style, especially your texturing way. In my own, I'm used to make maps with the Doom2 textures, and it's pleasant for me to see a map which uses so well these textures Smile

Thank you sir! I did implement difficulty settings, but I haven't tested them much since I only play on UV. But yeah, if I tried to play this map without saves I don't think I'd get very far Smile

Just a quick note that I updated the wad to Beta 5, which includes the improvements noted by Wilou84 in his playthrough.

All right, thanks !
Will definitely check out the new version later this week once I have some time.

So what's up for you next ?
Are you planning on recreating all the remaining Doom II maps ? Smile

No, unfortunately I don't have the time to design levels much anymore, so my maps will be fewer and farther between. I also want to take a bit of a break to work on other projects and also to gather up some new ideas. But I appreciate you asking!

The map is complete and has been uploaded to the /idgames archive, and the download link is in the first post. A big thank you to Wilou84 and franckFRAG for taking the time to play this level! Your input was very helpful!

Heh, you even have a story to go along the map, now that's a nice touch.

Congrats on the release !
We hope to see more from you, and thanks again for shaing your work with us Wink
