No it's a part of the problem, I was in a german school once and the method of teaching is completely different : teachers speak directly in the foreign language studied.
And from what I know, this method exists in the majority of the others european countrys.

It also exists in some schools in France ... After his depends on the method of teaching professor ... It goes like this ca in fac languages.

Yeah in universities the method is closer to the foreign ones.
I had a teacher with an english nationality this year, but as I've learned nothing new I wasn't present in class :P (I've got 19/20 at the test anyway)

any way the best way to learn is to go remain in the country in question. I lived 5 years spain and I learned Spanish in 3 months. Now I speak Spanish fluently

Yup, in engineering schools we have that too, it's already better. But you can't get this to work in the lower schools, it would be too hard for the majority of students. And nowadays they tend to make the whole educational system easier, in order to have their baccalaureat passing quotas as high as possible, so starting to actually teach something and making it hard isn't the way to go. :s

Ok for the last point but it's bullshit that it's too hard like that.
In germany for a good exemple, they start from the first grades to learn english and teachers speak in foreign languages directly... (very slow en clear at the beiginning of course).
France is where the english level is the lower I believe (with North Korea I guess xD).

I can only concur.... yeah, pre-university foreign language classes are pretty bad in france...

My english writting and reading was very fluent when I went to South Africa (excellent vocabulary and grammar). It still took me more than a month to really get used to speak and understand it well. And several more months to understand people with pretty bad accent.
